September 2, 2016 was my first time watching a King Hu film titled, "Sons of Good Earth" which in the director's eyes is his "first" film. He had made a prior film to this, but because he had no control of editing in the other one, he doesn't consider it to be his first film. My only exposure to Chinese films had been the Ip Man movies, which I enjoyed, and for this film I liked as well. I normally don't gravitate to war movies, but I liked the sort of underdog story going on between the Chinese towns-folk and the Japanese military. I liked the pacing and the story plot as well as the main characters that we as an audience have to follow. My favorite parts about this film were the relationships that Rui had with both Lotus and his partner/best friend. Although Lotus's and Rui's relationship had a somewhat awkward beginning, it developed into a warm genuine love. I also adored Rui's relationship with his best-friend because I'm able to empathize and relate their relationship with my best-friend. Spoiler alert ahead, I was really sad with his death scene, and wish it didn't happen but I think it was added in to show the repercussions of war. Overall though, I am satisfied with ending of this film.
